ValueStreamMappingWorkshop

Our organisation wants to deliver sooner, create value faster, produce less waste; it wants to be more "lean" than its competitors. But how do we get there from here? First of all, we have to know where we are, where we lose time, and where we create value or waste. A value stream map gives us a clear view on the whole process, so that we can find the places to optimize and see the effects of our ongoing improvement efforts.

In this workshop, we use value stream mapping for analyzing one or more existing processes brought in by participants. We look for delays and non-value adding work. Participants have an opportunity to share experiences in a structured way. We use simple tools like index cards to prevent discussion about drawing techniques and enable all attendees to participate in creating a value stream map.

Audience: Software developers, project leaders, coaches, customers, anybody involved in (IT) projects. Participants are not required to have a previous understanding of value stream mapping.

Process

• introduction with an example with a handout of a current/future state map example; explanation of concepts
• participants describe processes they use or have used; selection (by voting) of processes to map (for example one chaos, one agile, and one waterfall);
• creating current state maps in groups
• presentation of created maps; wrap-up by the organisers.
